Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan- Journey of A Young Boy to A Legend

Years have passed, since the death of the legend. And yet, the world still remember every lyric to his songs. His music enlightens the soul of every listener. Yes, we’re talking about Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, with a talent so rare that he was one of his kind.

Although his music is still a muse to  our ears, but not many people know how this young 16 year old boy became the legendary Qawaal of his time.

Ustaad Nusrat family migrated from India during the partition. Their entire family resided in Faisalabad. Qawali was in the blood of their family. Ustaad Nusrat father and uncles were Qawals and knew to play many instruments.

His father, however, expected him to pursue a career in medicine or engineering. But it seems like his roots were strong. After the death of his father, he performed for the first time at his ‘chaliswa’.

Very soon this young ustaad joined his uncles band and became the lead singer. became the head of the band, also meant the most superior in their family.

They performed together as a band at Radio Pakistan.

This legend singer soon gained huge fame due to his magnificent and moving voice. His qawallis were heard all over the world and in no time he performed his first international gig at World of Music Arts and Dance (WOMAD) in London in 1985.

Ustaad nusrat passed away due to medical conditions at a minor age of 48. He was known to be a hopeless romantic. He married his first cousin Naheed Nusrat and had a daughter, Nida.

This phenomenon singer passed away too soon, but he left us all the gift of music and qawallii.

His legacy is now being taken forward by his nephew, Ustaad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
