If you have been invited to a Sikh wedding or a punjabi pakistani wedding for the first time, you might by wondering how come they are so similar?Similarly Indian Punjab and Pakistani Punjab are more or less like the same person standing in from a mirror.Everything that is characterized by Punjab is also a major feature of its twin in India.Separated by a line of control, these two regions were forced to be apart in 1947.Lets have a look at the common similarities between our Sikh brothers of India and Punjabis of Pakistan .
Punjabi language is spoken by both pakistani punjabi and indian sikh. The dialect differs as a little hint of udru is seen in the spoken words of pakistani punjabi;yet the essence of the Punjabi language is the same in both the regions.
Our attire is a reflection of our colourful lives:
Women in Pakistani punjab and Indian punjab love Phulkari dresses. They wear shiny shalwar kameez while men are dressed in Kurta pyjama along with a turban.Especially the ladies love to “get ready” and when they do, they become killers.A foreigner visiting these two regions cannot make out the difference between the civilians of the two border areas.
We love to shake a leg:
All the events which takes place in these two regions are celebrated with zeal & fervor.Gidda and Bhangra are prevalent while punjabi folk music is loved by all.Loud music with high tempo beats is played during weddings as it holds a common celebrative value.
There is no difference at all in the mix of foods and flavours served in an indian punjabi Thaali or a pakistani punjabi table. The spicies and veggies used in the dishes are the same.Even the names of some of the dishes are are quite similar and also people of both the regions love non-vegetarian delicacies. They generally prefer rich and spicy foods. For Punjabis “The more healthy the food is,the less tasty it is and vice versa”
Pakistan’s Punjab is fed by rivers passing through India.ie indus and its tributaries. The area is made equally fertile with alluvial soil in pakistan as in the indian state of punjab.Sowing, cultivation and harvesting is done at the same time and even the types of crops grown are exactly the same.
We believe in one God:
No matter what side of the boundary one stands on,one can feel the power of faith.
Punjabis are extremely generous and hospitable in nature,be it the eastern side of the border or the western side.People in punjab have long been held closely with the knots of love, care and kindness. They treat you as the part of their life since the moment you meet them. That is the reason why they are the most romantic and amazing people.
Beauty runs in our genes:
Punjabi girls are all pretty whether it may be on indian side or Pakistani….theres a nakhra which they have and it makes them all the more desirable!!
Blunt and straight forward:
Punjabis are generally “Muu-phat”..if they do not like you they’ll tell you know right on your face with their raised eyebrow look.Once thats done, best is to simply move on.Incase you wish to grab them from behind,be ready for a broken nose.
A loud character reflects the munificence of the people of Punjab. From parties to just talking to a neighbour, their loud character is quite evident and anyone can easily makeout whether one is punjabi or not,yet the nationality cannot be easily konwn.
Being in the Pakistani subcontinent ,the two regions cannot escape the evil of corruption .Both sides of the Wagah border are abundant in corruption creeping deeper into their systems. The common punjabi of India and Pakistan wants this vice to be removed from its roots but this dream seems far from possible in the real world.
Our love for Cricket:
The love for cricket for both the nations is not hidden at all.People of both sides are crazy for cricket and cheer for their respective teams in the same way as they pray to their Gods before the exam.
Our love for Bollywood Movies:
Punjabis of both ends loves Bollywood movies. They adore Bollywood celebs. This is one of the trait where both have mutual views.
